This is part nine of a seven part series on Liberal Logic. (This is Liberal Logic we’re talking about…) You can see the whole set here.
We have heard for many years now about the “Separation of Church and State.” We have also heard that “You cannot legislate morality!” Yet many government programs, from Welfare to Social Security, from Nationalized Health Care to Carbon Credits rely on an appeal to our morality and our often are justified on religious grounds.
Welfare is a program that takes from those that can, and gives to those that need. If that doesn’t sound familiar to you, you need to get out more. It is often justified on the basis of religious grounds, namely Judeo-Christianity. We are told that Jesus instructed us to care for the poor. While true, I have failed to find the verse where Jesus says to take money from someone else to give to the poor. I also fail to find the verse where Jesus says it is the government’s job to care for the poor. Some have even founded whole denominations on this platform of Social Justice, but thankfully, there are some voices out there who are trying to correct these misunderstandings.
Social Security is another government program that is based around taking care of “the least among us.” It is often justified under Jesus’ call to care for the elderly, and even the Commandment to honor our parents. Yet Jesus also instructed us that a widow’s family should care for her, and said nothing about the state.
National Health care is being proposed. “How can such a wealthy program not take care of the health of its people?” They ask. They demand that we have a moral obligation to take care of the health, housing, feeding, clothing, and even energy costs of those who can not or will not take care of these things themselves.
Illegal immigrants around the country are holing up in churches, and it is somehow the left who says we cannot touch them there. Does anyone think that the same thinking would hold if, say, Bill Gates were to take refuge in a church to avoid paying taxes? Or even if a church in California refused to use compact fluorescent bulbs? Yet we are supposed to let these people use the church to break our laws and invade our country.
There are religious groups out there promoting “Climate Change.” Where is the outrage at this clear imposition of their morality on the rest of us? Where are the cries of “Separation of Church and State!” You won’t hear them. These religious groups have become state sanctioned and are clear to promote their agenda. Let them speak out against homosexuality, however, and they’ll be carted off.
This trend has been ongoing for some time, where some social program has been justified on some moral basis. We have been warned against this, of course. Over and over, and over, and over. Yet still people fall for it. No one from the right side of the aisle has the been able to stand up and say “Enough! Stop forcing your morals down my throat!” So they keep doing it. It seems that liberals are fine using religion to get what they want, but reluctant to turn to it to receive what they need.
So why do they use religion in this way? Why do they make appeals to Christians come every election? Why is it that they can quote the Bible so quickly when faced with opposition to their latest program, but flush it down the toilet when it is not needed? The answer, my friends, is simple:
It’s not about Religion, it’s about Control.
